Recently we kicked off construction on a project that has been several years in the making. We’re thrilled to finally see the physical work started on this “”ground-breaking”” project. New construction and substantial rehabilitation projects can take a long time in development and that timeline can be even longer for developments within affordable housing programs or where we are at the forefront of designing a new typology. There are so many people involved, invested, and wanting to get it right so that it can serve as a model for the future. This project is a small-scale development but we see it as an opportunity to show how we can sustainably add much needed affordable housing units through the use existing buildings and create a path for legalization of shared housing.

One Roof NYC began as a response to a Request For Proposals by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) in New York. The proposed development program seeks to preserve and fully rehabilitate an existing three-story residential building Brooklyn, while also providing it legal status as shared housing. The project proposes to convert the building into a safe, legal, and permanently affordable SRO building managed by Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation using the existing framework of the Third Party Transfer program.

Our vision is to transform this existing home into a highly livable shared housing development that gives tenants a safe, comfortable, and affordable place to live. Our proposal modeled that the project could be built at a lower cost than traditional units, house more tenants, provide a high quality of life that meets the unique and evolving needs of NYC’s housing market and maintain safety requirements and accessibility on par with, and in some cases exceeding, current code requirements.
