Drybar

Drybar is a new concept blow dry bar which opened its flagship store in Los Angeles in 2010, and is currently expanding across the country. Drybar offers just blow outs – signature hair styling services with no cutting or coloring – in a fun and dynamic atmosphere complete with music, video, snacks and drinks.

experience.

To achieve Drybar’s mission of creating an entirely unique styling experience, HHA crafted a solution that combined elements traditionally found in salons, bars and lounges. The resulting design creates the opportunity to relax, enjoy a drink, charge your iPod, and socialize with your friends while having your hair styled. The traditional, individual salon mirror and vanity lighting are located behind each chair to allow for a dramatic reveal moment at the completion of the styling session.

The drybar experience is carefully choreographed and begins with hair washing and scalp massage. At the shampooing stations, HHA created a spa-like environment which combines traditional wallpaper, beveled panel closet doors, weathered wood shelves and a custom painted yellow chandelier. The end result is a room with a relaxed airy atmosphere reminiscent of a beach side resort, a distinct and different experience from the pale white main salon and the dark silver bathroom.

design.

Part of the drybar design challenge was to create a space that conveyed seemingly contradictory themes – traditional and modern, comfortable and elegant, sophisticated and fun, clean and warm, pragmatic and indulgent. To do this, HHA mixed stylistic elements within a color palette highlighted by natural materials and brightly colored notes in drybar’s signature yellow. These elements, including an HHA designed blow dryer chandelier and custom painted ornate frames, provide an additional layer of whimsy throughout the store. To reinforce the transformation from bar to styling station that occurs during each visit, HHA carefully accommodated styling equipment into hidden drawers and panels.

brand.

drybar presented a unique opportunity to develop an interior design concept in parallel with the evolution of the overall project brand and graphic identity. Core elements of drybar’s graphic identity which are featured in their print, web, and signage programs inspired elements of the store interior design including light fixtures, signage boards, and other brand specific architectural details. Overall, this careful integration of branding, marketing, and interior design creates a client experience which is coordinated through every detail.
