Lawn Club
The project consisted of the development of a new concept entertainment space. The design centered around a series of indoor, private “courts” for the playing of lawn games – backyards for New York City apartment dwellers. Courts have adjacent seating, TV’s, as well as larger private “porches”.
The 27,000 sf space also includes an adjacent “clubhouse” with reception, bars, lounges, and supporting kitchen areas.

experience.
Lawn Club is all about having a good time and the space is designed to help the client deliver a great experience. The reception desk, lounge and main bars all playfully wink at traditional private golf and tennis clubs while adding modern touches and whimsical details. The reception desk is fronted with authentic croquet mallets and features period details like vintage phones, scripted neon and manual sign boards. Clients check in beneath the dappled light from a plant-covered trellis before moving to the bar and lounge areas.
The main bar takes its design inspiration from croquet wickets – echoing their arching form in metal backbar displays as well as the wood supports along the bar apron. Eclectic furniture and vintage trophies continue the club vibe in the lounge areas. Once you leave the club and enter the lawn areas, the experience shifts to being “outside” with brighter lighting and wider expanses of open space.
design.
The design challenge of Lawn Club was to deliver the fun and excitement of outdoor lawn games indoors. Careful attention was paid to the synthetic turf, lighting, and furniture to help create the feeling of being in a backyard, all be it one with climate control and a DJ booth.
The porches provide additional outdoor cues, including decking, picnic benches, swings, and trellises. Part of creating the outdoor feel of the lawns was through contrast with the club. The club is intentionally darker in finish and lighting and more refined in detailing so that moving through it first, makes the arrival at the lawn more dramatic.

brand.
Lawn Club presented a great opportunity to develop a physical design concept in parallel with the evolution of the overall brand and graphic identities. Through close collaboration, core elements of the identity which are featured in their print, web, and collateral materials were seamlessly integrated into the interior design in colors, materials, graphic patterns and signage.
As with many modern brands, Lawn Club lives in social media channels so the ability of the surrounding environment to provide the right setting for the content is critical.
