The project consisted of the development of a signature environment to complement a new concept restaurant centered on Moroccan-influenced Spanish Tapas. The 7,200 square foot (2,194 square meters) program called for a variety of interior spaces including a bar, bar dining, chef’s table area, bathrooms and two distinct dining rooms, as well as covered, enclosable exterior spaces, outdoor bar, lounge and open terrace dining areas overlooking the surrounding city.

The overall design challenge of the project was to create an immersive environment that helps to reinforce the food and overall experience of the concept without feeling in any way themed or otherwise inauthentic. An additional challenge was to create a series of smaller, intimate spaces within the relatively large overall space that could flexibly support a variety of group sizes and activities – from an intimate date to a corporate event. Finally, there was the challenge of effectively deploying design elements across a large space to deliver a rich, textured experience within the overall budget and durability constraints.

Using a number of targeted planning and design strategies, a large 4-sided bar was placed against the outside corner of their regularly L-shaped front of house space, allowing it to have to 2 long sides to activate both the interior and exterior bar and lounge areas. Custom, low-wall booth and banquette seating separates the bar areas from two distinct dining rooms at the ends of the L while still allowing for overall views across the entire space. The spaces are layered with a series of authentic textures and materials (weathered wood, hand painted clay tiles, copper panels, hand troweled stucco, and found objects and fixtures), signature elements (custom designed laser-cut lattice motif on seating and mirror walls), and original art work (commissioned metal bull sculpture by a local artist and custom wallcovering made from an image by an international photographer).
